“If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn’t sit for a month.” - Teddy Roosevelt
There’s a guy like this in every friend group. You know him. The one who’s got just enough information to think he knows everything—but not enough to realize how lost he actually is.
A few years back, I was at a backyard barbecue when my buddy Steve hit me with one of the most confidently wrong takes I’d ever heard. With a beer in one hand and a hot dog in the other, he leaned in and said, “You know, big-city crime is all the fault of Republicans.”
I nearly choked on my drink.
Now, Steve’s not a bad guy. He’s got a decent job, loves his kids, and can hold his own in a game of cornhole. But in that moment, he wasn’t thinking—he was repeating. Some half-baked headline or viral post had nestled into his brain, and he ran with it like it was gospel.
The truth? America’s largest cities—where crime rates are highest—have been run almost exclusively by one party for decades. Yet Steve’s convinced it’s the other guys’ fault. Why? Because he only listens to voices that confirm what he already believes.
And that, my brothers, is the dumb man’s curse.
The Prison of Limited Knowledge
Let’s clear something up: The dumb man isn’t dumb in the traditional sense. He’s not slow. He’s not incapable of learning. His problem is that he’s chosen to operate with a limited set of biased information—one that he never questions.
Sociologists call this epistemic closure, which is a fancy way of saying, “He only listens to things that agree with him.” A 2022 Pew Research study found that 64% of Americans rely on just one or two news sources, and if those sources have an agenda, guess what? The dumb man becomes a willing soldier in the army of “misinformation”.
And it’s not just crime. This pattern applies to finances, relationships, health—every major decision in life.
The Dunning-Kruger Effect
There’s actual science behind why Steve is so confident in his bad takes. It’s called the Dunning-Kruger Effect, and it explains how people with the least knowledge tend to overestimate their understanding. Studies show that people with low expertise overrate their abilities by up to 50%.
Translation: The less you know, the more you think you know. And that’s dangerous.
The Social Media Amplifier
If fake news is the disease, social media is the factory pumping it into the bloodstream.
Think about it—algorithms aren’t designed to educate you. They’re designed to keep you engaged. And what keeps people engaged? Outrage. Echo chambers. Content that confirms what you already believe.
Ever noticed how, once you watch one video about a topic, your feed suddenly floods with similar ones? That’s not an accident. Social media feeds don’t show you the best information—they show you what’s most likely to keep you scrolling.
And when people like Steve rely on Facebook, Twitter, or TikTok for their worldview, they don’t stand a chance. They’re consuming reality the way a funhouse mirror reflects an image—distorted, exaggerated, and usually misleading.
Did you know? People who get their news primarily from social media are 70% more likely to believe misinformation.
The Real-World Consequences
A guy like Steve doesn’t just hurt himself—his bad takes spread like wildfire. And when enough people believe something false, it influences public policy, corporate decisions, and even the way we raise the next generation.
Here’s what happens when fake news runs unchecked:
✅ Bad policies gain traction. People dismiss effective strategies—like aggressive crime reduction policies—because they’ve been convinced they’re “wrong” based on ideology, not results.
✅ The cycle repeats. Parents pass their flawed worldviews down to their kids. Studies show that children raised in low-information households are 50% more likely to remain in the same economic bracket as their parents.
✅ People stay stuck. Whether it’s crime, finances, or relationships, making decisions based on bad information means people keep making the same mistakes—and blaming the wrong things for their failures.
Did you know? Early exposure to diverse perspectives improves critical thinking by nearly 35% over a lifetime.
How to Handle the Dumb Man in Your Life
You can’t save everyone, but you can navigate conversations with guys like Steve without losing your mind.
At Work
🔹 Don’t argue fruitlessly—stick to facts. Data over debate.
🔹 Protect your credibility. When confronted with false statements, correct it calmly, citing reputable sources.
At Family Gatherings
🔹 Pick your battles. Sometimes, silence is the best strategy.
🔹 Use Socratic questioning. Instead of arguing, ask: “Where did you hear that? What’s the evidence?”
Among Friends
🔹 Lead by example. Be the guy who’s informed, not the guy who yells.
🔹 Redirect. If a conversation is spiraling into nonsense, shift it toward verifiable facts.
With Neighbors and Strangers
🔹 Stay courteous. No need to make enemies over “fake news”.
🔹 Know when to walk away. If someone’s too deep in their beliefs, let them be. Some people don’t want to be saved.
The Antidote: Humility & Curiosity
The only cure for the dumb man’s curse is intellectual humility. That means:
📚 Read widely. Get your information from multiple sources—not just the ones that agree with you.
🤔 Question everything. Ask why you believe something, and check if the facts back it up.
🌍 Seek diverse viewpoints. Surround yourself with people who challenge you, not just those who nod along.
📊 Embrace data over dogma. If the numbers don’t support your position, change your position. Don’t twist the numbers.
Did you know? People who actively seek out different viewpoints improve their problem-solving skills by up to 40%.
Final Thought: Don’t Be Steve
At the end of the day, no one’s immune to fake news and lies. We’ve all fallen for a bad take at some point. The key is what we do after we realize it.
Are you doubling down? Or are you adjusting course?
The world isn’t suffering from a lack of intelligence—it’s suffering from a lack of curiosity. The dumb man isn’t doomed to stay dumb. But he has to want to learn.
Stay sharp. Stay hungry. And for God’s sake—get your news from more than one source.
👊 Until next time, brothers.
